What is a normal voice lesson like?

Singing is a full-body workout.  So we begin by warming up the body to prepare it for singing with stretches and other movement.  Once we have found proper body alignment conducive to healthy singing, we go through a series of breathing and vocal excercises that help warm up the voice, continue to energize the the large and finer muscles used in singing, increase vocal stamina, and solidify good techniqe.  After that, we take a look at your music, finding ways to implement the same sense of freedom and ease that we covered in the first half of your lesson through our warm ups.  We also tackle the details in your music to get your pieces really polished, including learning how to read a score, gaining an understanding of musical style and form, working on characterization and context, and other details.

What should i

bring to

my lesson

???

1. Loose fitting comforTable clothes

Singing is a physical endeavor.  Wear something that is not constricting to movement or breathing.

2. Sheet music

Always, always, always bring a copy of your sheet music or lyrics.  Two copies (one for me and one for you) is ideal.

3. A pencil and/or recording device

We work very hard and have a great deal of fun in your lessons, but an invaluable amount of your musical growth comes from going home and reviewing the corrections we have made in your technique and other musical studies. Additionaly, you deserve to have proof of how you are progressing each week.

4. Water bottle
Have a water bottle handy to stay hydrated.  Decaffeinated/herbal tea with or without honey is also fine.

5. Optimism and Curiosity

Studying music and learning the techniques of singing are not always easy.  But they also bring the most rewarding, most satisfying, fulfilling experiences.  As a collective of student and teacher, we strive to experience the moments of artistic transcendence. We live for those moments.
